Jim "Helmut" Dankerl Memorial Scholarship

MariSol Federal Credit Union is sponsoring $1,000.00 scholarships to honor the memory of Jim "Helmut" Dankerl. Jim was born in Amberg, Germany and came to the United States when he was 17 years old. Jim was a retired Command Sergeant Major of the United States Army. He then retired as a superintendent for the Maricopa Facilities Management Department. Jim was a member of the Credit Union for over 25 years where he served on the Board of Directors for 20 years and was Chairman of the Board.

Criteria:

  1. Candidates will submit an original essay on the following topic: Giving back to your Community. Essay must have a cover with name and date. Essay is to be no more than 250 words. All essays must be typed on standard 8 1⁄2 X 11 paper, double-spaced.
  2. Essays will be assessed for creativity, originality, grammar and sentence structure.
  3. Completed Scholarship Packet is worth 200 points. Points will be deducted for each area not completed or submitted.
  4. Canidates must complete a minimum of 20 hours community service by February 28th.
  5. Candidates may be asked to participate in a panel interview. A parent or designated adult will be required to attend with the chosen candidates. Interview to be held at MariSol Federal Credit Union at 721 N. 3rd Street, Phoenix, on a determined date and time.
  6. Candidates must be between the ages of 16-25.
  7. Candidate must be a member of MariSol Federal Credit Union. If not currently a member, an account must be established at the time of entry.
Rules:

1. Candidates must mail or deliver the completed packet to the MariSol Federal Credit Union on or before February 28th. The completed packet must contain the following:

  • Scholarship application
  • Completed Essay
  • Letter of reference from English teacher
  • Letter of reference from family member or guardian
  • Copy of most recent report card

2. All written material submitted become the property of the Scholarship Organizations and will not be returned to the candidates. Decisions of committee will be final with no appeal process.
3. Winners will be notified no later than May 31st.
